Christmas Rush

Are any of you feeling the Christmas crunch?

Well, I am...mostly because of our children's schedule this year.
They are privileged to be apart of a very spectacular Christmas program put on by the church where they attend Missionettes.
It's quite the deal...adult choir, teen choir, live orchestra...we're talking big, here, folks!

Tonight marked a 3 hour rehearsal for them...then tomorrow is "dress rehearsal" and Friday is the first of ten...yes, you heard right!...ten performances! Five this weekend and five next weekend!

Are you beginning to feel just a bit winded just reading this?

I guess I didn't realize how many performances were involved...but yet, they love being a part of it all! The leaders are incredible and it's been so rewarding for them since my oldest joined last year.

But it is going to be a challenge to find time to all go to the tree farm together and cut down our perfect Christmas tree. At least, in the daylight!
But somehow, we'll figure it out...

I think I understand how easy it is for families- especially we moms- to allow stress and demands take their toll on us at Christmastime.
So much to do...
the home has to be perfectly decorated...must attend parties...send out those Christmas cards...buy and make gifts...wrap, wrap, wrap...
And somehow, in the midst of it all, we need to teach our children about the real meaning of Christmas.

So...what do we do?

I think that just as so many of us cut back on spending when there's a financial recession...when we start to feel overwhelmed, we need to start cutting back on activity.
For example...sure, I've written a Christmas newsletter every year for ages...but would the world stop if I skipped a year?

Don't you think that too often, the demands we face are sometimes put there by ourselves?
At least I know that's true of me.
Sometimes, we just have to let some expectations and activities go...and know that it's better to make simple memories with our families, rather than hurrying this way and that.

But all of this said, I'm not sorry we've committed to our children being in the choir. I believe it was the right thing for them...they love it, and in fact- although I won't be sitting through the show ten whole times, I am looking forward to seeing it at least once because I know it's going to be spectacular!

But since we do have this rather heavy commitment, I need to remind myself to relax my other commitments when possible...and to relax in general!
To give our family plenty of "down time" when there is no agenda at all.

And I'm going to really try not worry about the little things. Like getting our tree.
Because when I stress the details, I lose focus on why we're even putting up a Christmas tree and decorating our home...which is to celebrate God's love for us in His sending Jesus.

So, today I'm going to just trust Him that all the little things will come....the tree, the decorations, and perhaps even the newsletter... maybe.
But most of all, I want to keep my focus on the One we're celebrating and take time to enjoy the simple joys of this season.

What about you...do you sometimes have to find ways to try to slow down at Christmastime?

*Edited to say that I can't believe how many little typing mistakes I found and corrected just now...must have been all that stress I was writing about! :)

Sounds like a time your girls will remember forever. It's a sacrifice, but it will be so worth it.

It's hard to sometimes let go of the traditions, but I believe the Lord will bring new joy even when the schedule needs to be cut down.

Like Susan said, it's all about the worship.

I've really let some things go this year that were stressful and not important in the big scheme of things. With three kids, schedules are full. And what is most important to me are things that will make true and lasting memories for our family - not whether I've gotten all my santas displayed in the right place. The program your daughters are in sounds spectacular. I'm sure you'll have some photos to share, huh? Hope so! ((Hugs))

I look back (as a work outside the home mother) and wonder how I did it.

I think I failed half the time.

I think when my kids were smaller it was more hectic, but now that they are older, it's easier. I'm so looking forward to them coming home for Christmas.

I remember how busy Christmas time use to be when my boys were little and they were involved in all kinds of things. It seemed I was never home to do all the Christmassy stuff that needed doing and I'd always be in a panic. These days I'm not so hard on myself and I just do what I can...without losing sight of what Christmas is all about:-) I'd so love to see your girls performing in the choir!! xoxo

I know how you are feeling Tammy. I can remember Christmas seasons like that. I have a sense this year that there are many of us who are just sensing a need to slow things down a bit - to take time to quietly savor this blessed time of year. I think you are wise not to push yourself. The things that are most meaningful are often those sweet, quiet family moments.

I think when the girl's and I are baking for the holidays is when we just chill out and enjoy each other and we talk about the real meaning of Christmas.I hope your busy holiday is very special.

Tammy,

I am so glad that your children are taking part in the presentation. It is good for them to be a part of this magnificent show. I would love to see it. Too bad we live so far apart. I would be there with bells on.

This year things are not going as planned. With Aunt May sick and then passing, it put me a little behind. Now I'm sick, so what gets done, gets done and what doesn't will not. I am hoping to get the house decorated within the next week and we were to go today to cut the Christmas tree, but I would rather get the tree later than to see those grandsons sick on Christmas and this is nasty.

Take care, Tammy and enjoy Christmas on your own terms.

Blessings,
Mary

Yesterday was a particularly busy day for the girls and I...we had like 3 major things all packed in, and I was concerned that they would be overtired.
But actually, we did have a fun day...tonight is opening night and we're taking it easy today!

I'm hoping that a few other moms out there will read my post and find encouragement that they're not alone in the hustle and bustle, but they can purposely slow down a bit...and not do it all!

(And we figured out that we're going to get the tree Saturday morning...yay!)

Absolutely!
This year: no xmas newsletters and pics, only cards to friends far away or who are very dear to us or family.
No parties for work.
No trips to the mall past 12/15...it is just too nuts there for me...
We do online shopping mainly or the smaller mall in the southern part of our town or tiny specialty stores.
Also, we have cut down on # of gifts per person and only get one gift per grandparent now.
And YES...Plimoth Plantation is the English (British )spelling and the museum/plantation has left it like that. Plymouth is the spelling for the town.

I have been fortunate to have a friend & her daughter help me with my articial tree & it's decorations this year because of that old nasty arthritis. Mary I hope you'r feeling better.
I'm hoping to find someone to drive me up to see my wonderful grandkids in their performance. I enjoyed last years with my oldest grandchild being in it

I realize its not that big of a deal.
And when I feel the stress building, I stop and breath.
Looks like thats what your doing.
Stopping, taking a breath, putting things in order.
What fun for your children to be so involved with the REAL reason for Christmas! The rest will fall in to place, and if it doesn't-thats ok too:)
Thanks for the little reminder today! God bless you Tammy:)

We are a home schooling family, too! So fun to find your blog!:) Lori

No Christmas letter for me this year, either. I had it printed on my cards- just a nice little note to everyone. I gave them my blog address so they can see what we are up to instead!:)

I completely understand how hard it is to balance it all! We cut down on presents and activities. We talk about the real meaning of Christmas and look for simple ways to show love or be encouragers to others.

I used to try to be super mom at Christmas but that got old really fast! God showed me that I needed to slow down and put Him first.

You're doing a great job!
