Show and Tell #16

I'm back for another Show and Tell Friday hosted by Kelli at There is no place like Home.

This week, I'd like to show one of the dolls I played with as a child. This one isn't a cuddly soft baby doll (shown in the post below) but another popular doll of my era...

How many of you over 40 remember Velvet?

Yes...here she is! Part of the newest fashion doll collection of the era. She has been in my possession since somewhere around 1970.

If you're close to my age but still don't remember her, perhaps you remember her sister, Crissy...? (Edited: I mean cousin! I knew this, actually, but just accidentally typed the wrong word. Mia was actually suppose to be Velvet's little sister...have to get the facts straight!)

I never had Crissy, but I had friends that did!
I also had a less popular, brunette cousin of Velvet as well. I couldn't remember her name, but when finding this picture of Crissy I discovered the whole line of dolls on the internet.
Her name was Mia, so now I can rest easy.

What was so cool about Velvet and her cousins for the time was the fact that you could actually make her hair short or long! Just push her belly button and give a tug to that pony tail...and...

Tada! A whole new look!

When you wanted it short again, just turn the knob on her back.
A little strange...but it all worked!

OK...her once lustrous growing locks are a bit frizzy now, despite a hasty brushing before today's photo session. Her cute little ringlets are a thing of the past.
But that only proves just how much my friends and I played with her back in the day!

Plus, let's face it. Hard to believe, but when I do the math, she is about 38 years old!

As I was mentioning, I was just now researching my doll online, and I was amazed at how many websites are out there devoted to Velvet and all of her fashionable relatives!
Who knew???

I haven't even really shown or demonstrated her to my girls yet. She had just sat in a box of my other childhood relics which I retrieved from my mom in the last year.

But I guess it's time she gets the recognition due!

I think it must have been this very commercial that had me, at seven, begging my parents for a Velvet doll for Christmas back in 1970...

Thanks again, Mom!

Yes, I remember her. And our daughter had Chatty Cathy, and even Mrs. Beasley too. Remember those two?

Happy Show n Tell. Hope you can stop by and see my book collection today.

I never heard of this line of dolls - must be because I'm too old and Kristen's too young!

It is such fun that you have these things to share with your girls. I don't have anything left from my childhood in the way of toys. We moved too many times!

Oh my goodness, I DO remember that doll! I didn't have one but my best friend did and we were just fascinated "growing" her hair! Do you remember "Little Kiddles"? I had a whole bunch of those!

I am over 40, but I don't remember Velvet. I do remember ads about dolls who had hair you could make longer or shorter like that, so I must have just forgotten the name. She's in pretty good shape!!

Omigosh, I DO remember that doll! I didn't at first but then when you mentioned about pushing a button and her hair would grow, then it clicked! lol Isn't it amazing what we're just finding out now about all the toys we use to play with when we were younger. Great that you still have your Velvet:-) xoxo

So nice that you saved your doll. I have never heard of this doll, but I am from the Tiny Tears era!

I graduated from High School in 1970, but don't remember that doll. I did have one, I think her name was Tressy and she did the same thing with her hair---that must have been in the early 60's!

I should have specified...if you are IN your 40's- not just over 40, because I think this family of dolls began in '68 and went to '76. :)

Are you all seeing the retro-mercial?- it's showing up for me, but just wanted to make sure it posted OK!

(And I've heard of Chatty Cathy and I think Tressy...and I SO remember the Mrs. Beasley doll! I would see her in the stores when I went shopping with my mom...I just loved that show "Family Affair"! :)
Ahhh....memories...

I still have my Velvet doll and will probably never give her up! She is complete with dog teeth marks on her leg, as our family dog thought it was a chew toy. When I had my tonsils out my grandmother made her a wedding dress to cheer me. My sister had Mia and our neighbor girl had Crissy -- we loved playing together with our long hair dolls. My sister got scissor happy and cut Mia's hair short, so no more long hair for her. Thank You for sharing as brings back nice memories!

Wow, I sure do remember these dolls. I never had one as they came on the scene after I was into my doll era which lasted way beyond the length of time it should have.

I used to love to play with Crissy when I babysat and the kids went to bed. I had more fun doing her hair :)

What a great memory! I also remember the Little Kiddles that Connie wrote about. I had tons of them and played with them for hours and hours. I remember the other dolls you commented about as well. I was a true doll lover.

Hi Tammy!
How sweet that you still have this dolly :) The hair that grows is such a unique feature. So many of those childhood toys are highly collectible but I know you are treasuring yours for the sweet memories.

I vaguely remember those -- but I was too old for dolls then.
I do remember being jealous of the other little girls who had the popular dolls when I was a kid. I'm thinking there weren't as many television ads aimed at kids -- and I rarely saw TV much

Hi Tammy

Remember me? I've been so bad about blog reading lately...not because I don't want to read, but because of my crazy life recently. Lots of company, which has been wonderful and then all the medical tests, "hoopla", etc. I'm back now though...finally.

You've been a busy, busy girl. I've really enjoyed reading all your posts I've missed and seeing all your photos. It's been fun catching up with you.

Hugs!
Kat
