A Peek in the Past

I don't know about you, but I've always been fascinated with old family photos!

When I was at my mom's about a week ago, I picked up a few more old photos from her to scan.

If you're like me, when you see an old photo- especially one of a family member or ancestor- don't you wish you could jump into to it like a time machine if only for a moment to learn just a bit more?

But I do know a few facts...

This is my Nana...my mom's mom- at an employee picnic. She is the woman in the center, wearing a dark dress.

This was taken before my mom was born...but after my grandmother's first husband had died during the great influenza epidemic around 1917.

So, here she was -a working mom sometime around 1920.

Her little boy- my uncle L. who is now also passed away- shown on the left.

We don't usually equate the early part of the 20th century with working moms, but they existed! And usually by necessity.

Fast forward many years...and here's Nana holding me...

I've written a post about Nana here...a spunky woman that I wished I could have known better!

I've mentioned before that the women in my family of generations tend to have their children later in life.
Nana had her daughters (my mom and aunt) at age 39 and 41...
My mom, in turn, had me- her only child- at almost 36. (Which now doesn't seem all that old at all!) and I had my two at age 36 and 39.

It's because of the fact that our generations are so spread out like this, I'm even more thankful that my mom is healthy in mind and body enough to enjoy her granddaughters!

In fact, she and her friend are going to drive up and meet us at the zoo this week and we're all very excited! (I'll be sure to post pictures!)

My mom is back to blogging again, too! Yep, at 81 she is computer savvy...
I prettied up her blog a tiny bit for her when I was down there, so please go over and say hello if you get the chance!
Tell her I sent ya'!

And in honor of Granparents' Day this week, go do something nice for the grandparent in your life! (Even if that person is you!)

Blessings!

I love old family photos also. I love the history in them and way they capture a moment in time and freezes it.

Your mom blogging at her age is fantastic.

I love that first shot and I know the other one must be special to you. You're right, I don't think about women working back during that time! But I'm sure it did go on and even longer ago too. Your upcoming trip sounds fun! How wonderful that your mom still drives, gets around and does the computer too!

Hi Tammy,
I also love the old photos and learning the stories behind that. My great grandma had her 11th child at the age of 45! After her, the women of my family had their babies young!
Have fun at the zoo. I'll look forward to your pictures.
Thanks for your prayers for C. It's been a tough few days.

Hi cathing up on your blog after our trip to the Zoo. I really enjoyed it, especially seeing the Zoo's newiest baby elepahnt. He is so adorable.
The little girl in the picture next to my brother Les is my cousin Arlene who died at the age of 8 so I never had the chance to meet her. She & my big brother were close both in age & played together.

I too love a good old photo!!

I enjoy gathering what info I can about family too. We are both fortunate to still be living in the same area as our great grandparents and I've been taking trips to the cemetaries to take pictures to have names, birth/death dates and I find myself standing there wondering about them. Now to find the pictures to match to the ones I've taken!

Have a great weekend!

I think my favorite posts are when you write about your family's past. It is good to remember that working women have been around for quite some time. I know; I was a stay at home mom who worked, too, but I mean outside the home.
