Kindred Spirits

Yesterday, my youngest had her old friend (and I use the word, old, with a smile...) from preschool over for a play date. My oldest likes K. also and so also played with them this time...but deep down, K is really Lil Cherub's special little friend. A friend who shares her love for all things princesses and fairies and cookies with icing.

My youngest attended preschool with her last year (in the 3's class) but with money a bit tighter, we opted not to send her again this year- especially since I was home schooling anyway.

Sometimes as much as four months will go by without them seeing each other. (And in Pre-K time, that is measured more like four years to you and me!)
Some friendships would be all but forgotten by
this age if they weren't constantly being thrown together by one reason or another. But not these two...

Not only do they remember each other well...but it is so obvious, every time they are together, that their friendship is so very
special.

What is it about certain friends that become like "kindred spirits" as Anne of Green Gables so eloquently spoke of? What makes certain friendships, that even when time and distance grow looming, they refuse to die on the vine from lack of nurturing, but instead somehow thrive.
You see them again and it's as if no time at all had even passed...your connection is still completely alive.

I have a few friends like this. One friend just isn't good at e-mails and phone calls, but it is "a given" that our friendship is for life. We live about an hour apart, and we do try to plan lunch dates, but sometimes that only actually happens twice a year. Yet, when we do finally manage to squeeze that time in for each other, there is no awkwardness or disconnection. We're just....friends.
We still remember what kind of tea or coffee the other one likes, and we still laugh at the very same things.

So this afternoon, I loved having this little friend over to play. She is so sweet and easy going- a real pleasure to have around! And most of all, she seems to adore my little girl and the feeling is mutual.

It fascinates me, really...to see a friendship between five year olds that is so
real.

And they just don't know how blessed that are. Real friendship- real in the true sense of the word- is hard to come by.

And though I have those "forever friends" that I mentioned...those friends that I see so sporadically but yet, we still remain close.....watching them made me long for more of those sweet and uncomplicated friendships that these two little girls modeled today. The kind that hasn't been tainted by years and our wonderful "maturity".
No pretenses, no head games...just pure honest delight to be together.

You know, I've caught some glimpses of these kinds of friendships through the people whom I've met in this blogging community. I know many of you have echoed the same feelings...that it is amazing how strong a bond we can form with friends we have not even met in person.

And watching these little girls today taught me that I want to go back to simplicity of friendship. To remember how it felt when hearts were so pure and tender.
To pray for more friends in which I can have that undeniable connection with- a kindred spirit... that whether four months or four years go by, we are still irrefutably friends.

And if we can share our talks over pink circus cookies and cherry 7-Up...well, so much the better.

It is pure joy to watch especially girls formulate these close friendships at such a sweet young age. I have seen this with my daughters and they are now 12 and 15 yikes! Many of those preschool age friendships have lasted even though we may live miles apart.

These thoughts on friendship are so warm and real. I have a couple friends that are like that -- we just connect from the heart no matter how often we see each other. It's wonderful.

The little girls are such a cute vision in pink!

What a lovely post Tammy. Those two little friends are just adorable. I know exactly what you are talking about. And I've noticed too that there are some people whom you can connect with in about ten minutes. You meet and there is something that just clicks. I think Jesus had special friendships and that He blesses us with them too.
You spoke for all of us.

Tammy,
What a beautiful and touching post.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if their friendship continued long into their adulthood?
I agree with your observation on the blogging friendships too. Age doesn't seem to make a difference at all. The friendships are just pure and simple and such a blessing..

Well said. I have a kindred spirit from my college days that has remained near and dear to me even though we live several states apart. She is that kind of person that knows me inside and out and vice versa. We are lucky to make even one friend like that in a lifetime. Your little girls are blessed. Great blog you have here by the way!

I agree - what a blessing it is to find a kindred spirit. What a sweet post, looking at it from both ends of the spectrum!

How sweet this post was, to see a friendship between five year olds that is so much like some of our adult relationships. They really have found a kindred spirit in one another. God bless that friendship!

I have very few friendships like this one.

XO,
Jill

How sweet! How beautiful! And your photos made your post just perfect!

My daughter was married nearly two years ago and she had one of her life long friends in the wedding party and two others attended. These are lasting memories! In fact, we had similar photos in their music montage....sweet memories of the beginning of valuable friendships!

Enjoy these days! They are filled with such cherished memories.

Truly a treasure to have even one friend such as this! I do not think this type of friendship applies only to girls either.

My son (now 5th grade) has a friend he's had since kindergarten. They are complete opposites... but truly "male kindred spirits". It blesses my heart to watch them grow... together!

Thanks for such a heartwarming and touching post!

That is so sweet. I love the way you took the pictures.

You know, I think this type of friendship comes very naturally to girls. Well, with the right combination anyway. Sometimes they can be like oil and water.

This post made me think of a special friend I met in the US and even though we were from different countries it seems that our friendship was meant to be, the connection was really from the heart, the faith we shared and how we found out we were so much alike.

You can tell by the sweet photo that little cherub & her friend love each other & are happy to be together. I still remember one of my childhood friends named Mary. I wonder if she lived to grow up & whether she is still alive. She had poor health as a child & may have had a heart problem, but we had such fun together & were kindred spirits.

Love it!! My college roommate (I need to post about her someday) became my first year teaching roommate. Then she went back home to teach and I was alone. We used to write each other every month - letters in cursive! - but that stopped. She doesn't e-mail. We do Christmas letters and I call once in awhile. But when we get together, it's like time never happened. It's priceless, for sure.

Yes, Eugenia's characters were real and the stories, too. She spent much time, moving to the island even, to create the novels. I didn't realize it until now. My sister gave me a book written in 1978 called St. Simons Memoirs in which she tells the story of telling the stories. Really great, and I'm so glad I just rediscovered it. Amazing how much we forget!

What I really want to know is "what self-respecting mother would name her daughter Eugenia?"

Sorry. Dawn distracted me.

Bad Dawn. Cut that out!

Well written, Tammy. Right now Silly-Head and Girly-Girl are best friends. I hope they always will be!

A post written from the heart:-) What would we ever do without our lifetime friends...I have a couple and as you say, no matter how long it's been in between meetings or phone calls, the friendship and camaderie is always there. Loved the pictures...the one showing the two girls holding hands is very precious. xoxo

Very sweet. My Fifi -- 11 years old -- has had the same "best friend" for nearly 7 years.

Even though she sometimes wonders if they are growing apart as their hobbies and interests take divergent paths, she still jumps joy and gives an uninhibited giggle when it's time to arrange a "playdate" or sleep-over.

Sweet pictures, Tammy.

What a great post!

I love watching little friendships blossom...and you're right, we should all pray for such relationships in our lives. Although the pastor told us this morning that we need to go out and find them as well. I agree.

And blogging has, indeed, blesse me with very unique relationships for which I am grateful.

I pray you've had a wonderful Sunday.

Hugs.

:-) Susan

Awww, what a special friendship, and a wonderful post! I have several friendships just like the one you speak of, time may pass, but it's like you were never apart, I spent the weekend with one of them this past weekend, her name is Laura, and until Friday, I hadn't seen her in 4 years!

God gave us such a precious gift when he gave us friendships. They are special when we are young--and remain so throughout all our days.
