Mommy Growing Pains

Last night, I watched my littlest girl "graduate" from Cubbies.

For those of you unfamiliar, Cubbies is the preschool part of the Awana club, a great organization that meets once a week to play games, learn Bible memory verses, earn patches and jewels and learn about Jesus in a fun atmosphere.

This was our second year with Awana. My oldest will be graduating Sparks next week...and she has simply amazed us these past two years.

But last night, we watched my youngest and all her little friends sing for us, shout out the verses they learned, and receive their awards.
If there had been a prize for the most enthusiastic, Lil Cherub would have won tonight, hands down. She's not always so exuberant, but for some reason, she was just so excited about it all. Maybe because she knew she was graduating.
Or, maybe she was being extra cute because she knew our camera battery had just died. Arg!

Yes, this is the last year my littlest will be a Cubbie...how can this be?

Last year, my husband and I took her to her first meeting with slight trepidation, wondering if she was big enough for this whole Awana thing. At three, she seemed so little...and she was little!

As that first year progressed, her daddy and I helped out as temporary Cubbie leaders for the month of January. A little tiring at times, but so much fun.
Especially, those Cubbie puppet shows!

So last evening, we watched as our children all sat down on the stage area, and a last Cubbie show began. The leader was talking to Cubbie Bear and the other puppets about how some of the children would be back in the fall...but some would not. Some would be going to Sparks, and it would be oh, so exciting, but that no, Cubbie, you couldn't go with them.

OK...maybe only you moms will understand...
But mixing my monthly hormones with the scene of my baby leaving Cubbieland forever was not a good combination.
Oh, I held it together...but I did feel an overwhelming desire to suddenly yell out,
"Cubbie, don't listen to that woman! They're all still just babies...look at them! Maybe I can smuggle you out of that musty summer box and we'll bring you along, after all..."

But I held my tongue and just sniffled.

My little girl seemed oblivious to my feelings. Earlier today, I let them watch another viewing of The Sound of Music. On the way home from her Cubbies graduation, she had the audacity to sing, (mauling the words just a bit...)
"I am seventeen, going on sixty-teen," after belting out, "How do you solve a problem like Mawia."

Just two more days until D-Day! Hopefully, my friend will have their dresses finished today, and I'll find be able to get the gloves dyed...along with my roots!
I'll try to post one more time before we head out...

Awww! I can totally relate to your feelings. I always used to be so excited yet so sad and melancholy at those kinds of things. They seem to small to be moving on.

Sounds like you still have a very busy couple days before the wedding. Make sure you get new camera batteries! :v)

Wow, am I behind! Love the WW. Love the sniffles. Love the butchered song from SOM. So cute! Can't wait to see wedding pictures. How far do you have to go? What color are the dresses? You've probably told already, I can't remember.

Care Bear is in a class on Wednesday nights and last night she was with the big kids, playing bells, and sharing in front of everyone why she picked a certain picture - long story. But I was so proud to hear that she was so brave. She is SO ready for kindergarten!

I started reading you just the time you were sharing about the wedding fiasco with your little daughter. I'm glad I found you!

She sounds adorable! My parents had me in Awana from cubbies to guards, its such a great way for children to learn the bible and be physically active. Good job sending her. :-}
I also love Sound of Music and often sang 16 going on 17...especially when I was 16.
I found you through Amy's Scavenger Hunt

I can't think of a better treat than watching the Sound of Music...

A touching post that could only come from a mother...I've got lots of years like this ahead of me.

XO,
Jill

I remember those feelings well. I look at my grown children and still remember those little programs when they sought us out and gave the sly little wave and smile. Oh those years went by so quickly.
A sweet post Tammy.

Oh, I feel for you. They just grow up way too fast, don't they?

My heart goes out to you. These milestones are so painful to a mom's heart. How I wish we could stop time and just linger with our kids at those precious stages in life.

Hugs to you!

Oh those milestons are so hard! My four year old just "graduated" out of her toddler bed to an honest to goodness real twin bed and will be going to kindergarten in August. My youngest will be in pre-school....*sigh*. How does it all go so fast?!?!

I remember Cubbies. Those little blue vests with circles of joy sewn to the front.

Now you will have a little red vest with more circles to sew on. More verses. More bible stories.

"..Your Word is a Lamp to my feet and a Light to my path.." I am glad to hear your little ones are hiding His Word in their hearts.

Those times are always hard, when they are doing something for the last time! We've all felt that I think.
My youngest is graduating college this weekend! Yikes! I'm a bit sad too.
The wedding will be fun...make sure you have a camera battery ready for all those pics!

*sniffle* I know, I know.

Event organizers really should try to avoid scheduling those moments when our hormones are doing their business! It's just not fair. ;)

And of course it's that much worse if you're not blessed with the pretty, "Demi Moore" still and quiet teardrop kind of cry.

Myself -- I boast a horrid contortion and if I try too hard to stifle it, I might eventually audibly gasp as if I haven't breathed in 20 minutes. It's beautiful to behold -- a real Kodak moment.

those hormones sure make us sappy
(:

Or we're just sappy and we blame it on the hormones.. giggle,
