Their Steps

Before I go any further, I wanted to thank my dear friend, Pea, who last week honored me with a new award! Thank you so much, Pea!
True, it seems kind of a humorous award name if you know me very well...I'm a bit shy in person, so
schmoozing is the last thing I would probably use to describe myself!
But then I read the meaning behind this award...

It’s an award for those who have the natural ability “to effortlessly weave their way in and out of the blogosphere, leaving friendly trails and smiles, happily making new friends along the way. They don’t limit their visits to only the rich and successful, but spend some time to say hello to new blogs as well. They are the ones who engage others in meaningful conversations, refusing to let it end at a mere hello - all the while fostering a sense of closeness and friendship.”

Reading this definition make me feel humbled and honored! (Especially, coming from Pea, who personifies this to me!)

Blogging to me has surpassed the original purpose to practice my writing while keeping friends and family updated...it has become a source of encouragement and friendship for me, and I thank all of you who have enriched my life in this past year!

I'm going to think on this one, and come back to bestow the "schmoozes" to a few others! :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm hoping you all enjoyed this last weekend of July.
The last weekend! I absolutely cannot believe how swiftly this summer is flying by. I know people say that every year, but this summer is careening like a rocket through time, and I wish it would slow it's pace just a bit to a nice, lazy stroll.
But despite it's high speed, God's been able to not just teach me recently through the more painful parenting moments, but also in the slightly less-painful, yet foreign ones.
Saturday was a day of bravery for my oldest. And in a roundabout way, for me, too.
By evening, she had tackled a series of "firsts", ending with a visit the amusement park with her daddy and sister, where she graduated from riding those "big kid" rides...you know, those rides where everyone is screaming and even this mommy will not set foot on.
And I get just as nervous from the ground looking up, so all I can say is, I was glad I wasn't there to watch her on all of them or my fingernails would pretty much be history.
(This one might look tame, but I hear it went quite fast!)
But first, let me back track...
In the morning, my husband was working so I took the girls to a community center carnival. There was a rock climbing setup there, and I was surprised at not only my eight year old's bravery to try it, but my own to allow her with no hesitation. I am the ultimate nervous mommy (and it doesn't help that she broke her arm jumping off a mere 3-ft slide at age four!)
but something clicked in me this weekend, to relax those apron strings just a bit and let her try her wings.
And she conquered that mountain and reached the top!!!
And let me back track just one more time...
Just before this, we had dropped off some books at the library...
where I actually did my first act of bravery as a mommy.
I had awakened this morning with a pulled muscle in my hip, so when we reached the library, we parked almost right in front of the door. I told her she could take the books in all by herself...a first! When she picked her jaw up off the car floor, she excitedly took the books as her younger sister and I watched her like eagles, and she went inside. A moment later, she emerged...a beaming smile of pride upon her face.
This was a huge milestone for us... up until this weekend, she was officially still my very little girl, under my wing of protection, who isn't even allowed to cross the street alone. This weekend, she is still very much under my wing...but I loosened a few feathers just a tad and gave her a bit of wiggle room.
I grew up with very protective parents...so it comes by me naturally.
And yes, protective is good.
But as someone who has this natural bent, I have to continually remind myself that they actually belong to the Lord- He is their true Protector.
Yes, as a parent, I have to pray for wisdom and use it...ask for His guidance and listen...but I have to also relax my hold just a bit...year by year...day by day.
This may be one of the biggest challenges of parenting there can be.
But when I remember how much God loves my children, it becomes just a bit easier.
Then I can start to learn to rest in the fact that they belong to Him.
And that He is ultimately the One who loves, protects and guides them- through the valleys, over the mountains...each and every step of the way.
Tammy,
I'm sure you took some deep breaths and said a few extra prayers as you let your daughter spread her wings. As she grows, you will feel yourself more and more willing to let her try just a bit more.
Congratulations on your schmooze award. Pea picked perfectly on this one :)
I am impressed with your daughter's bravery! I would have been a chicken on that rock wall! Good for you, Mom, for knowing when to let her spread her wings!
A well deserved award from Pea! Congratulations Tammi!
You and I are on the same wavelength this week about letting our kids spread their wings and the fact that they belong to the Lord and He has his eye on them.
Congrats on the award!
Oh, the struggle of letting go is pulling at me these days. Everything has become about "doing it myself".
Congrats on your award from Pea.
Kaylee, please give everyone a reminder when you go in for your surgery so we can pray for you although we can start praying for you now.
I think it is the evil people who are out there, that we pray for protection of our kids & grandkids. You were brave about that Rock climbing. MY IT LOOKED HIGH in that picture.
Congratulations on the Shmooze!!!
I'd say your young one looks quite able on that climbing wall. But no one ever outgrows the need for a mom. So keep encouraging her from the sidelines, all the way to getting her out of the house (YEARS from now - relax!!!)
Oh I know exactly how you feel. We have been gradually letting go of the reins this last year (Rachel will be ten in January)and then had to rein back in due to her health issues. Now we are releasing again. It is tricky and means constant prayers for wisdom. Praise the Lord that God is in control. :)
You are so perfect for the Schnoozing award. You do indeed always leave a smile.
We have a rock wall at the camp. I have never climbed it never will but I have done the zip line - I kept my eyes closed and held on for dear life.
Hugs!
We're just a couple of schmoozers aren't we?! hehe You are more than welcome for the award dear Tammy. I'm so proud of your daughter...and YOU! It's never easy loosening the apron strings but there comes a time when you have to start letting them do some things on their own. Your daughter proved that she can do those things she tried this past weekend:-) I use to love all the carnival rides and would go from one to another for hours...now I just look at them and my tummy feels queazy! lol xoxo
Good for her! She's really growing up. I saw a little girl in the library today (I'm sure her mom was somewhere around), but she was checking out a very large stack of books by herself on the self-check computer. I wanted to ask her how long it would take her to read all those books - she must be older than she looks!
My first year students arrive for orientation in two weeks! Where has the summer gone??? I have much to do to be ready for them, and for the faculty who will be coming back as well. YIKES!!
Look at her go! I can so relate to the nervous by-stander mom, not wanting to put fear in them but also praying nothing bad happens--and then the pride! Your writing touches us where we live.
It's hard to let go. I still worry about--Like this weekend I worried as one of our sons and his family traveled. Then tonight, I got a call from one of his friends. Seems son had asked his friend to check on us while he was out of town! UH OH1 When did we switch places?!
Great firsts for your girl. The rock climbing wall looks very tall. You are brave to let her do that.
Congratulations on your award that is just great.
Congrats on the award!
She is a brave girl to climb the rock wall. I so struggled with the letting go thing, at times wasn't very good with it at all.
I remember the day that Funsocksgirl, my eldest was only 7 or 8. Her GS Troop was learning to rapell and I was one of the rapell masters who had the privilege of throwing people's children off the cliff (carefully harnassed and rigged, of course!).
FSG mad eit clear that there was NO WAY she was going over that cliff and no one was going to make and...etc.
After the last little girl went over, I had to go over the cliff myself to effect a "rescue" - the 5 year-old's shirt had gotten snagged in her carabiner. After untangling her I decended to the bottom and prepared to leave.
Imagine my surprise when the gals at the top hollered for me to "Look!"
There was my fearful daughter bravely dangling over the side of the cliff on a rope! She descended slowly and both of us were sobbing the whole time and I took something like 4,000 photos of her coming down. Then I unhooked her and we both hugged and sobbed and celebrated her victory.
I was SO proud of her!
You are deserving of the schmooze award! =)
I know what you mean about wanting to protect our kids a little too much at times, but I'm glad you discovered some freedom this weekend and built some confidence in your daughter too! Sounds like fun!
Congratulations on your award! That is so nice and like you say coming from Pea it is extra special!
Yes it's hard to let our children go isn't it? My son is 31 and if I know he has a difficult client that day my stomach is in a knot. Now isn't that pathetic?!!lol!
They are only ours on loan from our Heavenly Father and He certainly will take care of them just as well as we could. Or better!
Very cool award, and loved the thoughts about your daughter taking those big steps. "If you love something, set it free . . . " comes to mind. This is the way God loves us and so obvious that you love your girls!
