The Bride Goes Wild

Whenever I am asked the question, "What is your most embarressing moment as a mom?"... the scene that always pops into my mind is the same one, time after time. Not that I haven't had other embarressing "mom" moments that have cropped up. But my poor oldest daughter will forever have this story branded upon her...and it's only fair, since after all, it was my most embarressing "mom" moments- and she did it!

For all of my extended family who may be lurking, I know you all know this story by heart! But for other friends, I couldn't resist telling it again. (And perhaps preserving it in writing so that the story will be all that more set in stone!)

It was May 3rd, 2002. My husband's brother, Ben was at long last giving up his bachelorhood and marrying his sweet girlfriend, Shari, in the wedding of the year. It was a big wedding. Bridesmaids everywhere...and my husband was one of the groomsmen. I was not in the wedding, but that was Ok, since my sweet little two and a half year old was asked to be a... minature bride!

So...there was a flower girl and ring bearer...and then a tiny little bride and groom, to boot!
We had purchased a darling bridal dress for her, and even found a veil and gloves...and when she had everything on, the effect so sweet!

Oh, and I should add here that I had just given birth to my lil cherub, just 15 days before. So, basically, my role was tied up with caring for my newborn... and hoping that she wouldn't pick a crucial time in the ceremony as time to let out a wail.

Meanwhile, my husband was dashing in his tux, and did a tremendous job being in charge of the Little Bride.
Someone else, though, was responsible for nudging the Little Bride and Groom down the isle because Hubby was at that point standing with the other attendents on the stage.
And the moment came...my Little Bride with her groom came toddling down the isle. People "Ahhhhed...". Folks laughed sweetly. And you can imagine my pride.

But then, things started going slightly awry. It was apparent that our Little Bride was making good on her "off-hand comment" to her daddy that she wanted to dance on the stage when she got down the isle. When she and her groom reached the end of the trail, she, indeed, let go of his hand and trotted up to the stage, thus beginning her incredible twirls and spins. She just was arabesquing all over the place!

People good-naturedly snickered...then the snickers turned to big, ruckus guffaws. I sat there, frozen...like the quintessential deer caught in headlights. My infant lie in her carrier near my feet...she seemed to be doing OK. Dare I leave and go up to the stage in front of hundreds and hundreds of people and retreive the wayward bride? I seemed glued to my pew, unable to move...but with an incredible urge to crawl under it.

Finally, my husband left his diginified post and escorted said-bride off of the stage. Realizing her moment of fame was coming to an end, she let out an ear-piercing wail of protest all the way down the steps, and into my less than eager arms. And just when I thought I had conjoled her into quietness, she insisted on going across the isle to sit with her cousin. When my answer to her was a no, the wails began all over. Suffice it to say...the little bride left the building.

There's more to the story. But I will say that my husband's brother and new sister in law were wonderful about it- I was apologizing profusely to them but they just thought the whole thing was simply hysterical. To think the real bride was gracious enough to love the whole thing...even when a two year old tried to steal her glory! But that's the kind of gal she is.

Me, on the other hand? Perhaps it was my sensitive new-mother hormones, but I felt as if I was wearing a tattoo plastered acrossed my forehead:
"Mommy of child who dances in front of hundreds of wedding-goers, throws tantrum, and causes general chaos at elegant affairs." It was days (OK, years) before I could laugh about it and mean it.

But you can bet this story in our extended family has lived on.
And just like the many family folklore that all of my husband's siblings like to take turns telling around the campfire on thier annual coastal camping trip, this one will some day be right up there with the best of 'em.

And when my daughter is someday in her teens, and all of us old fogies are bundled up, roasting marshmellows, she will sigh heavily and groan,
"No...please don't tell the Legend of the Dancing Mini-Bride again!"

And I will smile.

(posing with cousin Jessica...oh, how she wanted to sit with her!)

Very funny...love the legend. It will be really great if she does it at her own wedding. :)

In her defense (and perhaps to allay your embarrassment a teeny little bit), when a bride sets things up for a mini bride, she kinda asks for a possible performance like that. ;)

I was a flower girl at age four and was no where to be found for the garden ceremony. The photographer found me BEHIND the trellis, sprinkling my flower petals there, oblivious to the ceremony going on on the other side. I have the photo to prove it. :)

LOL! I hope someone, anyone caught it on video! To maybe show at her wedding reception someday? You know when people have such little ones in their wedding party they generally should realize that something probably will not go as rehearsed! Good for the bride for going with the flow.

This was so funny! Children in weddings can be very unpredictable. My daughter had four small children in her wedding and they each had their own little issues!

Yep, that is what my sister in law told me...that she knew what she was in for by having 2 and 3 year olds in her wedding. Plus, she is a teacher, so that helped! :)

Everyone was actually disapointed that the video panned away, as if to not have anything marr the perfection. HA!
Even the bride and groom were disapointed not to have it!

And that is cute, Code Yellow Mom, about your sprinkling the flowers behind the trellis. ;)

How cute! Even if was embarrassing for you at the time. Too bad the videographer didn't get it on tape. It would be great to have it to show at her own wedding someday.

I'm so glad you're able to laugh about it now, because it sure gave me a good laugh!

Those embarassing moments for moms are often the most precious in hindsight. She did make an adorable Jr. Bride & still enjoys dancing, though I don't think anything will top that impromt moment. Code Yellow, I loved your story as well. I too am disapointed that the camera person failed to capture the moment. It would have been a good entry to that show where people send in videos of their kids doing cute things.

Oh my - how funny! :) She was a darling mini bride, I'm sure her dance was lovely as well...that's too bad it wasn't caught on camera, too. Perhaps at her own wedding she can dance on stage all she wants.

Oh my, what a wonderful story! I spent my dbil/sil's wedding outside in the parking lot caring for my then 5 month old so I can relate to the "mommy duty" during wedding times. Thanks for the smiles!

Great story! My daughter was in our pastor's daughter's wedding at age 2. The pastor was the most worried, so we sent her down the aisle, then I sat in the front pew with her, then put her in the recessional. Not possible with your tiny baby!

Thanks for your comment on the story about our son and his wife. They are really learning how to be married!

What a great story!! I've never heard of mini brides and grooms. What a fun idea. And what a great initiation for the bride into your family. At least she knew what she was getting into!

What a funny story. You've told it so well. I've never heard of a mini-bride and groom at a wedding before. What a cool idea (sort of!). Anyway, thanks for a great laugh, you poor thing. *-)

This was a great story. Does she still love the spot light. I think she had it right thought. Little girls in pretty dress is a dancing must. It's part of the package. You all should have realized that. lol.

What a sweet story! If that's the most embarassing thing she's ever done, you're doing good!!

I laughed out loud at this one, thank you for sharing this story!

I think you'd be surprised how many of us love it when something like this happens at a wedding and the real bride and groom seem to enjoy it the most.

I've seen a tiny flower girl finally arrive at the end of the aisle only to announce in her loudest voice that she needs to pee!

I'll bet everyone there (except you) enjoyed her performance.

:-)

Very funny story. I do think it was the mother hormones. . . . My dd was flower girl at my sil's wedding, where I was matron of honor. She was up at the front with me, talking loudly to me during the prayer. She was only 3, I think, but she knew better than to talk during prayers!! She promptly left and went to sit with her grandmother instead!

That's a cute story. And, hey, if the bride thought it was funny, then you're good! Little kids in weddings always leave a story to tell. :)
