Did you ever have something sort of ordinary turn out to be completely wonderful? Not to complain, but sometimes the very opposite happens to me. Today, though, I was in for a sweet surprise.
Let me start at the beginning...For awhile now, my oldest has been going through a "phase". A little clingy, a little whiny...I'm not at all sure exactly why this is- unless it's sort of a "growing pains" stage. At seven and a half, with a four year old sister, she has suddenly wanted to be babied again, as if she feels herself on the threshold of leaving her "young" childhood behind and having to plunge into the less secure, older part of her childhood. And perhaps she's more than a little tentative.
This is something new to us, since up until recently, she seemed more than eager to always want to do things herself and be such a big girl. Now she just to wants to cling onto my apron strings with a tight grip.
So while I'm trying to get to the bottom of all this, I decided that in the meantime, maybe she and I should have a mother\daughter date. It has been too long since just she and I did anything together.
I suddenly remembered the charming tea room that one of my best friends and I have luncheoned at a couple times. What if we dressed up a bit and went there- just the two of us- like little ladies?
She was very excited at the prospect. "Mommy, you must wear a dress...or at least a skirt."
So I did, and she donned a lovely dress and we were off.
Meanwhile Daddy and Lil Cherub had a date for a yogurt parfait at the elegant Mc D's...(or as the girls call it, since it was hard to pronounce, Naked Donald's.)
She was almost giddy with anticipation as we drove the nearby town, and she was just as thrilled when we actually entered inside. It's a small tea room which houses on the other half, an antique shop, and so the whole area is filled with all things vintage. There is jsimply not a more charming place with simple elegance around for a mommy\daughter tea!
My little girl had a decadent scone with cream, while I chose a chocolate croissant. And she relished in pouring her own tea into her English cup from a little teapot!
And as stated at the beginning, this Saturday afternoon tea held surprises and delights even for me.

After our tummies were warm and full, we began to stroll through the antique shop section...when suddenly, I looked down and saw a real, live gigantic poodle, groomed to perfection and lying as obedient as if she were part of the decor. The manager seemed pleased to show her off...and then, asked, "Do you want to see my other poodle puppy?"
We followed him over to his desk area, waiting for this tiny poodle to emerge, when out pops this HUUUUGE Andre the Giant poodle, making the first one look like a shiz tu. (I should have gotten a picture of him, too, but didn't want to appear to be- like- touristy about his dogs.)
Apparently he was 14 months old, and had not reached his full size. I'm telling you all, it was taller than my seven year old on all four paws...complete with a coiffed poodle-do. We were simply amazed and enchanted at the same time.

After we oohed and awed, my daughter asked me if we might try on the old-fashioned hats we passed by in a box. I wasn't sure...so we asked and were told to help ourselves. Then the real fun began...we modeled and tried on hat after hat, complete with boas, and we snapped pictures like crazy. But we did it all, with the quietest of voices and dainty giggles.
As we finally left and headed home, I realized that in my endeavor to give my oldest some extra attention and mom-time, I ended up enjoying the afternoon as much as she did. And I think we're just going to have to have many more little dates like this in the near future.
However, I think this simple, unassuming little dessert at a tea room will have an extra special place in each of our hearts. I know it will for me.

What a wonderful treat for you and your daughter, Tammy! It sounds like a delightful time.
What a beautiful story! Now I want to take my 7 1/2 year old out for lunch, too!
It sounds like you two had a nice time. One on one time with our children is a good idea, something I need to do more often.
How sweet! I so need to do that with my kids. I don't one on one time on any kind of regular basis at all and I really need to work that in. They grow up so fast.
Sounds like the start of a beautiful tradition. That poodle must have been something to see!
When my daughter was teaching, she had a huge box of vintage clothing that the little girls delighted in trying on!
Such a charming post Tammy!
I'm so happy that you had this wonderful bonding time with my oldest grandchild & I'm so glad that you did this. I would love to see this very intersting place sometime. I think that there is a part of every little girl which clings to their childhood, afraid to relinquish it to growing up. There were times when I was jealous of my sister being the baby
I wish we had a tea house here...I would love to take my 26 year old daughter there!! You know sometimes they just go through stages of clingyness...my daughter still does especially since we moved to Ohio and she still resides in KY...
I enlarged the pic of your daughter so I could see details...looks like my kind of place!!
:-D
Adorable! Something to remember always. Even better that you've recorded it here.
what a fun mommy/daughter date you had - and you created memories to last a lifetime!
That was a wonderful memory that you created...I am sure she will always treasure it. Making memories is what it is all about!
You're making memories together that will last forever, Tammy. She'll never forget these mommy and me outings.
I love standard poodles. I mean, I love little dogs like my shih tzu Chelsea, but the great big standard poodles are awesome.
It's treasured moments like these that will forever stay with you and your daughter. That's what being a mother and daughter is all about...shared times involving laughter, heart to hearts, silliness, etc. To this day my mom and I still do those things when we can meet and I so enjoy them...I know she does too:-) I can just picture you two trying on those hats and boas! So precious!! Much love xox
That is so sweet.Wish they had tea rooms near us when my daughter was young. But, she now has an almost 17 yr old daughter herself. By the way, my daughter's name is almost Tammy. :)
Just popping in to say how much I appreciated each of your comments! :)
And to also say, please forgive all those typing errors...I posted it at midnight last night! ;)
I wish I could say that the whininess and clinginess was now cured, but nevertheless, I'm still certain it helped her on some level...we bonded and had so much fun, I just know it had to just a little! :)
What a delightful day you both had. I am sure it will be a precious memory you both share all of your lives. You are a very wise, perceptive mommy. That was such a terrific idea!
What a great idea you had! And it turned out to be perfect. Sounds like so much fun!
How fun...I used to call my 16 year old (when she was little) my velcro child...enjoy the velcro as long as you can!
Very sweet. I love mother/daughter dates. The wonderful thing is that we can still have them when they grow up!
Aww, what a delightful Mother, Daughter date the two of you had and it brought back such sweet memories of doing the same exact thing with my daughter! I loved seeing the picture of her all dressed up, very pretty! :)
Thanks for visiting! I'm so glad you did! Your tea story is so sweet. It sounds like you had a lovely mother/daughter time. I love going to tea, but it has been some time since I've done that with my own mother. I may have to make a mother/daughter date myself:)
Almost makes me wish I had a girl.
*Warm fuzzies*
Sounds like such a great time together!
How super fun! Once when my eldest was about 10 we had an old fashioned tea-party and she invited friends for the afternoon. We had tea-kool-aid and cupcakes, played games like musical chairs. The kids had a blast.
Precious!
Thanks for stopping by today and for the encouragement. We can do this!!
