Monday Odds and Ends

Today, this is one of those posts that sort of scatters over all different subjects...so, hang on to your coffee cup....

Is it just me, or is 2007 already zooming along at breakneck speed?
It's President's Day, but pretty much a normal day for us....hubby still has to work and we still will be doing a little school work. Math, language arts...and learning more about presidents, of course! (
George and Honest Abe, to be precise.)
My oldest is mostly over her little bug she had. We're so thankful it was very short-lived, since so many of our friends had it drag on for weeks!

And some exciting news in our extended family...
Hubby's brother and his wife (who live very close to us) have been in the process of trying to
adopt an African American toddler. She is actually the birth child of the adopted child of one of hubby's other siblings! (Follow me? No? Just trust me, there's a family connection here...) ;) My in-laws have been married for about ten years and have no children. (She has some medical conditions which have deemed her not a good candidate for having children of her own.)

Well, they are still trying to work through some red tape and had hoped to have her by now...but meanwhile, last weekend we just received the shock of a lifetime! She is 3 months pregnant!!! She is under very good medical care and we are all very excited, but prayers are appreciated for mom and baby to remain healthy throughout this pregnancy.

But can you imagine how they will have their hands full by this summer?! Never been parents and then to suddenly adopt a toddler and have a newborn...let the excitement begin! heehee

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On a completely different subject, I mentioned briefly awhile back that I would tell more about why we decided to keep our pup, Mandy. (I say pup and not puppy...when they reach a certain size, it's just hard to say pup-
py, no matter how young they still technically are!)
The final decision to keep her came when I went for my sleepover visit to my mom's a few weeks ago. Not only did I have a much needed, relaxing visit with her, but it also proved some
things to me. We ended up watching a show that some of you recommended but I can't get at my place- "The Dog Whisperer". We sat, transfixed, for 2 whole hours, and I was simply blown away by how he was able to train those wild dogs!
They all made Mandy seems like a pussycat!
I also wondered how my husband would do, frankly, with the kids and the pup. To call it a test may imply a little more conscience thought than I actually put into it, but yet, it was a bit of a test, in retrospect.
You see, I had been basically doing all of the training, correcting, feeding, rescuing....and he had yet to connect with her. But something happened during my night away. During his time of taking charge, he and Mandy began to....bond.
I was amazed to see such changes...and not only with that doggie\dad relationship, but with Mandy herself. She was starting to calm down...ever so slightly, mind you....but she was
definitely mellowing just a tad.
I really felt then that my prayers for wisdom were being answered. And I really have a feeling that she's going to make a great dog when she grows all the way out of her gangly puberesent stage.
Just so you all remember...this is how she looked when we brought her home the day after Thanksgiving...
(That's my little seven year old girl's hand, for some size perspective...have you not seen anything sweeter and more cuddly with four little legs?)
And here is how she looked a week or so ago...
(That stretch puts her at about the length of child who was in the first picture at a mere two and half months later. Three words...Puppy Chow Bulk!)
Oh, and see that vacuum in the picture? That vacuum is never far from sight when Mandy is around. She always manages to find papertowels to pull out of the trash and tear them up into itty bitty peices. Is that fun, or what! Even better is snitching wood from by the fireplace and making sawdust everywhere...*sigh*
Anyway, needless to say, she's still a lot of work at times, but I feel very peaceful with the decision!
Before I leave, I wanted to let you all know about a bloggy book club I'll be trying to participate in. Hosted by Boomama, we will be reading Beth Moore's "Get out of the Pit"...and although I still don't have the book in my hands yet, I am excited because our church is participating in a Live telecast event this Saturday...a seminar on this very subject!
They are still unsure if the book club will be a one-time event or continue...but come join us if you can!
Well...time to "get with the program" as my mom use to say...I'm sitting here in my PJs so I guess a part of me does, indeed, think this is some sort of holiday! So, time to pull myself out of this computer chair and get on with the day. I will try to visit you all later this afternoon and evening!
Have a wonderful week....God bless!
Hi Tammy. I did a blog entry just for YOU. So be sure you check it out.
Now I know what I did wrong with our beagle pup. I should have left her alone with my hubby for a week or two (or maybe a month!) and THEN he would have loved her. Instead, we found her a new home so our marriage would remain intact!
It's zooming by here, too. Glad you're almost past the bug yuck.
What super news! And a blessing. The same thing happened to some friends of ours. They adopted 2 african american children (brother and sister) and just found out they are expecting!
I feel your pain about the puppy. We have had the same situation. I'm trying to be more patient. ;-p.
I need to get up from here, too and start thinking about feeding my family! LOL
So your brother-in-law is in the process of adopting his (adopted) neice's child. Easy as pie! There was an adoption in my husband's family much like that.
I'm glad you made the decision to keep your pup.
Congratulations to your brother in law and his wife on their pregnancy:-) The same thing had happened to a couple that lived up the street here years ago...they had just adopted a little boy because she had been told she would never have kids of her own...then she got pregnant and had a little girl!! I will certainly keep them in my prayers!
Once the pup settles down, I'm sure you'll wonder why you ever thought about wanting to get rid of him:-) xoxo
It sounds like she (the pup) needed to figure out who was the alpha dog. Not that she needed to be, but if she's not going to be, she probably needed to know who is. She's a pretty girl. My little Boston Terrier does the frog leg thing too!
Fun odds and ends - it's cathartic to do this once in awhile. That is one big pup! I give you credit for hanging in there - I couldn't do it! He's a beauty and I hope he'll be a good pet for years to come!
WOW! Exciting news for the family.
I can't get over how much the pup has grown. So sweet that you are able to keep her.
I bonded with her the one & only time (Christmas) I saw her. Has she decided that your honey is the Alpha dog? I know the shows I have watched of the dog whisperer talks about the Pack (usualy more than one dog) but I think I have heard him mention alpha dog, & that the dog has to learn who is in charge. Maybe she learned a thing or two when you were at my house. Wow she sure has grown since I saw her!
As you know I'm praying for our new mom to be in the family.
Good to hear your children are all healthy once again! And what exciting news for your in laws!
It was a holiday for us in our part of Canada but my hubby had to work anyway. My kids are off all week (again). Sheesh I don't remember all these days off when I went to school.
I'm glad you decided to keep the pup. I'm curious to find out how my sister-in-law had done with her "wild and woolly" pup. She watched the Dog Whisperer and had great hopes of getting him to calm down just a little.
Isn't it amazing how that works. I've heard that same story many times - adopt a baby and then get pregnant. Double blessings!!
Nice chatty and newsy post!
I can't even tell you the number of people over the years that I know that have adopted and then found out they were expecting their own. It's such an added blessing!
Your pup is just growing by leaps and bounds.
Glad all your sickness is leaving!
:)
yes, "puppy" does seem like a stretch, huh? :)
much congrats to your growing family! i've heard of that happening so many times!! i have a friend who was diagnosed infertile for 10 years, adopted four kids in the meantime, and then bam-bam-bam had three in row, one on top of the other!
Whew! That's a lot you have going on there, lady! Baby news is great news! Congratulations to your entire family. Praying for both a healthy mom and baby. They must be so excited to be getting two! *Smile*
Go Puppy Chow! Mandy chews wood? *LOL*
Congratulations to your brother-and-sister-in-law. They must be so excited. I'm sure you all are!
And I'm really glad you decided to keep Mandy. She's going to be a great family dog when she mellows out a little. I have to say though, at least with Chelsea, it was a long time before I dropped "py" from "puppy." I spent a full year saying "pee?" every single time I looked at her! She seems to have it down pat now, but puppies are just a big challenge. Kind of like babies and toddlers. LOL
What wonderful news for your inlaws in your family, very exciting!
And I think that dog whisperer thing is pretty good...if you can't get it you might could find some dvd's to use.
